Physician Assistant (TRAUMA SURGERY) Wilkes-Barre, PA Work Schedule: Rotation Geisinger Wyoming Valley Req 34754 Stephanie Figueroa Geisinger Health System is seeking a Physician Assistant Trauma Surgery to join a dedicated team of compassionate providers at Geisinger Wyoming Valley in Wilkes-Barre, PA. To perform, under the responsibility and supervision of the surgeon, diagnostics and therapeutic tasks to allow the physician to extend his/her services through the more effective use of his/her knowledge in the sphere of decision making required to establish a diagnosis and to plan therapy. He/she may assist in gathering the data necessary in implementing the therapeutic plan of the surgeon. Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on their assigned clinical area. Additionally, the physician assistant will act as the patient advocate in the medical care systems serving as confidant, advisor, and liaison between patients and physicians. Reports directly to the surgeon for all patient-care-related functions. Charting privileges will be determined by the Procedure and Medical Records Committee as recommended by the surgeon. Deals directly with the medical staff members, nursing personnel and other departments to coordinate patient care requirements. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To assist the surgeon in the preoperative care and workup of patients to include: • Perform and record comprehensive history and physical examination. • Execute and relay medical regimens as directed by the supervising physician and/or as described in the work agreement between the physician assistant and the supervising physician. • Confirm operating schedule, availability of blood and summarize appropriate data prior to surgery. • Assist the supervising physician in surgical critical care, clinic, and in the operating room. • Provide ongoing comprehensive outpatient services under the supervision of the supervising physician. • Participate in the postoperative care of patients, being especially knowledgeable in the recognition of postoperative complications, specifically: o Inform the physician of all changes in the patient's ongoing condition. o Collect ongoing data and write pertinent notes on patient's chart on a daily basis. o Assess the patient's postoperative course and implement indicated therapy. o Make routine rounds as directed by the surgeon. • As indicated by his/her training and experience, perform therapeutic procedures as directed by the surgeon, including but not limited to the following: o Wound care and dressings o Venous and arterial cutdowns o Insertion and use of central venous pressure lines o Nasogastric intubation o Insertion and removal of chest tubes o Suturing of lacerations o Thoracentesis o Insertion of enteral feeding tubes under fluoroscopic guidance The successful Physician Assistant candidate will work under the responsibility and supervision of the physician and require completion of an ARC-PA (or predecessor organization) approved physician assistant program, current NCCPA certification or eligibility and Pennsylvania State licensure.
